The Only Black Person in Town

One day last week I was sitting with the lunch crew, the crowd was real thin because people were doing other things. It was mostly the older guy and one asked me if I had any problems with racism, which shocked me  a little bit because I’ve always felt some racist vibes from him. Like if I’m talking he’ll cut me off and he’ll very rarely make eye contact with me. I told him I haven’t had that many problems and I try not to be out and about during times where most people are. I just don’t like dealing with the stares constantly.

He said he wanted to make sure I wasn’t having any problems and I thought that was real nice of him. He told me he wasn’t perfect but he’s a lot better than his parents and a hell of a lot better than his grandparents. He even said his daughter is a lot better than him and, I definitely respected him for that.

I told him that I felt really comfortable living in the town that I do as opposed to about 2 towns over where my internship is. He told me if I had lived there I would have been the only black person living in the town. He was then able to tell me the last black family that lived there and when they left.

The Countdown Begins!!

I tallied up my hours as of last week  and I am happy to announce I have less than 809.5 hours left. It seems like time is going by so fast!   809.5 / 1040 hours total. I can definitely see some growth from my self already.

SN: I had a half day to day…well really a 3/4ths day, lol. The snow started coming down from nowhere and I did not have snow prof shoes on today. And…it would have helped if I knew classes were totally canceled before I trekked across campus in the snow, but I survived anyhow.

Akward Moment

Sign hanging up in  O’s office, I thought it was hilarious.

So, I was in a committee meeting, one of three I’m on which is perfectly fine with me because it just counts as more internship hours. The meeting was coming to a close and someone asked me to recall what took place in the other meetings I’m a part of. One of the staff was amazed that I was on more than on committee. ‘CTD’ said yes, she’s doing a lot she’s a slave for six months. It was weird to hear but I definitely know she didn’t mean any harm by it and I don’t think the rest of the group did either even though I live in redneck central. Well, everyone except one person, a young guy, one of the recreational therapist. He looked at me with this fear on his face then he just turned red and that’s the only thing that made it awkward but no one else seemed to notice ALTHOUGH I would have loved to read every one else’s mind at that point to see if they picked up on anything.

A few minutes after the meeting ended ‘CTD’ came in a little flustered saying that the recreational therapist had stopped her in the hallway and brought it to her attention and she apologized and said she didn’t mean to offend me. I know she would have said it no matter what my race was and, if my race was a problem I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be there.
