Piano for Dummies

Since being banned from guitar, I’m glad I got these books in the mail on Friday.

The green book is in one of the music therapist ‘K’s’ room and her book is really old, like hanging on by a thread. I thought that maybe on the off chance I’d be able to find one on the internet that was in a little better condition and I’d be able to take it with me wherever I was. The piano parts are real simple but sound like you’re doing something special, lol. Something more than block cards since I don’t quite get the ‘ump- paa-paa’ method of piano playing, lol, it just doesn’t sound right when I do it.

The book has lots of good songs, show tunes and there were plenty available on the internet. Mine looks brand new besides a little spot on the inside cover and it cost me $14, sounds good to me, and the other book follows the same idea just different songs and that was about $14 too. I’m sure these two books will be my best friends in the upcoming weeks.

When I have spare time or a group doesn’t show up I usually site read on piano and I have to say even though I’m nowhere near where I was on piano before when you get on it every day you can really see the improvement.

Book Reports

So these are some of the books I’m reading for my book reports and other assignments.

This of course is just a collection of case studies, it’s big but I really enjoy reading this book. It talks about music therapy with a lot of different populations even music therapy assisted childbirth. Since it’s the population I’m working with I wish there were more case studies on working with those with developmental disabilities. The most relevant case study for me was on on Rett’s Syndrome. I still enjoy reading it though.

This book is a collection of stories, directed to parents of children with autism. It talks about the lengths that parents go through to get their children to be able to connect to the world and not be this stereotype of autism they hear about. These parents get so many test and retest, and they hound doctors, go to conventions,  seek out specialist in different countries, really giving up their own lives to help their children. My book reports are supposed to be about the book I read and how it will help me as a therapist and although it’s a good book i don’t quite know what I’ll say. One thing that I get out of is when it really helps and encourages parents when their kids are connecting or they see that someone else is as interested in their welfare as them. I think that’s real important to keep in mind.

This is another compilation type book by Oliver Sacks which is of course the author of Awakenings and other awesome books. The clinical tales in this book that I’ve read are about people with sudden and rare illnesses and them adapting to it and just the stories in general. Lots of memory type situations like people suddenly not being able to remember anything after their 40′s, having no short term memory, and amnesia. There are different sections of the book and so far I’ve just been reading the losses section.

These are the three books I’m reading, for some reason I couldn’t read just one at a time, I need variety.

The First Steps of My Project

I was excited just to have figured out my project so early. I know it will take A LOT of work but I’m so excited for it. The next time after I saw K I told her that I had decided on a project and explained it to her. Well, she was and intern then an employee when her supervisor was going through the process when they started the positions.

She told me to go to staff development and human resources and they should be able to direct me to the original paper work and proposals that was submitted. That was yesterday, I went there today and was directed to human resources and that she’ll let me know if she remembers where they might be. It was time for me to be somewhere so I will do it tomorrow.

K was excited at the prospect of me being employed there since the internship site is the only state run facility with music therapist in the state. She talked about how the head of the facility was serious about having not only music therapist but 3 full time music therapist at the facility. Whenever budget cuts took place he ensured that the music therapy department never any lost any positions.  Music therapist along the years were afraid that when the position changed hands it would not be that way but staff across the campus have seen the benefits and the needs for it for the residents.

O’s office mate talked about the importance of music therapy at the facility and importance things to include. He said to include descriptions of the OT/PT type things and how cost effective it is. He said at ‘internship site’ they can never get OT’s or PT’s because they are out in the middle of nowhere and they don’t have the money to pay them.

K had more advice for me. She made sure that they were going to hire me as a music therapist and that Music Therapist would be my job title. K talked about they had a long battle when the facility wanted to change their job title to activity coordinator.. Which lead to her opinion about something.

I talked about AMTA regional conference coming  up in March and she gave me her brief opinion on the whole thing. She talked about how she was a music therapist before the two MT organizations joined to form AMTA. She had worked at the ‘internship stie’ ever since then but was grandfathered in. She started the next part by saying that she is totally for the continuing education credits that are required of music therapist. But, she does not support AMTA so much because she does not feel that they support music therapist down in the trenches trying to make positive things happen for the project. So since K has never received any support or backing from them she wants to know what they really do for music therapist. She said she was tired of paying all they money and was wondering what they were doing with it. She tells me she knows she’s a bad example and not to listen to her sometimes but I love hearing other peoples opinions and I want to know those questions to. If I’m paying dues every year and more when I need help, when I need support, I need to now that my professional organization will be there for me and the only perk won’t just be a discount on books.

The last thing she told me is to make sure with my job I will really be in there, not sitting be hind a desk, and just writing  plans for others to do. She said we’re music therapist we’re meant to be in there getting our hands dirty and that the ones that are meant for administrative roles quickly show it.

I am getting lots of information and I think I’ll need all of it. I’m excited and a little bit more aware of things I may have to deal with or confront but, definitely all in the name of music therapy.

As a side note K told me that she is not MT-BC, like I said before she had gotten tired of paying after having no support. She said that ‘internship site’ does not require it of her, and she plans on working there until she retires (soon) so she doesn’t even think about it.

My Intern Project

I’ve had each of the music therapist suggest possible subjects for my intern project. The criteria for the project is pretty open, it could be anything just as long as it is approved. When ever I am given a new task I am haunted by the ghost of the last intern past, lol. From the stories, I would still like to meet her. I was playing some bells in the chime group and they mentioned that the last intern couldn’t play without the color coded notes. Anyway, for her intern project she decided to do a sign language class for different clients, everyone liked the idea. They said her execution was poor, apparently she picked a pretty hard, wordy song, that none of the clients were familiar with and it didn’t work out o well.

I knew I didn’t want to start yet another group on campus, but on the other hand, I’m sure the clients would like to get out of their usual environment but I didn’t want the success of my project to be dependent upon the weather conditions or if staff members wanted to bring people.

Everyone kept telling me no pressure to pick a project just yet but at the same time the suggestions just kept on coming. K suggested that teach a group of residents how to individually use the Wii, specifically Wii music. The goal being for them to use the machine independently and be able to use the jam/ improv function and record the video that the game makes. I like the idea and it’s something I’d do…but I didn’t want it to be my project.

O suggested I do something related with sensory integration. It set a light bulb off but what exactly would I do. I really like doing activities involving sensory integration and I think that one of the three sensory rooms on campus is unfinished. So, if I wanted to go that route I could, but to top the other sensory rooms would take a lot.

Finally CTD (clinical training director) came up with an idea that really grabbed me. A  little back story: My internship is at a state facility, one of five or six in the state. My mother has worked at the sister facility of this one for over 25 years and that I have worked at for the past 3 years/ summers and have been around my whole life.  So, in talking to CTD I told her about how they said they have repeatedly told me there is a job for me when I graduate. She was very excited and after talking for a little bit she said, “You know that would be a good intern project to write up a job and program proposal for the facility. And, you’ll be killing two birds with one stone.”  I was so excited, I could have jumped up and done some fist pumps.
