Dollar Tree Props

Many times I find the most amazing things in Dollar Tree to use in sessions. For up coming spring they have these huge cloth pinwheels I was going to get for my sessions, but then I came across smaller plastic ones.

Some clients might be able to destroy these but most won’t for the short period of time that they’ll have them. I don’t know which was better the huge ones are these. When spring gets closer, around Easter time I do an activity using these. I imagine I’ll do some song and have them blow to spin the pinwheels at some point in the song. If I have a group that can’t do this, there is usually a big fan in every room I’m in so I’ll turn it so they just have to hold the pinwheels.

If I had gotten the big ones I probably would have needed the fan to make them work, or they would have to spin it with their hands. I will probably do some directional movements with the pinwheels to “hold them high over your head, all the way out to the side, ect.”

Who knows I might get some big ones to spread through the group.  But about these: they are pretty durable for normal wear and tear, I’ve twisted and bent then a little and they’re still in one piece. The stick is like a stick you use for grilling (I won’t even try to spell that word right now, lol). Then there is a plastic coating over the stick, which is better feeling than splintery wood and it won’t absorb germs! They did have points on them which I just snipped off with scissors. They come 3 in a pack, in different mixtures of colors $1 each, I got 3 packs.

Colors

during my observing of ‘K’ she brought to my attention that things like colors and directions, animals and ect. were important to reinforce because they learned them once upon a time and have never been asked about them again and they forget. So I made this activity specifically for the one group but I’ve used this activity with three groups so far.

This activity is to the song ‘Colors’ by Kara Willey, you may have heard the song in commercials. I have laminated cards that I’ll show you and I turn them over like a deck of cards and have each client pick a laminated card that has a color and picture that corresponds to a part of the song. When I sing about their color or picture they hold their card up. I’ll show you the cards I made with the lyrics that go with that section.

I am green today, I chirp with joy like a cricket song

I am gray today, gloomy and down like like a morning fog

I am orange today, loud and messy like finger paint on the wall

I am red today, hopping mad like a playground ball

I am black today, strong and tall like a great big bear

I am purple today, bright and happy like a butterfly in the air

I’m a rainbow today, all the colors of the word (repeat)

All the colors of the world are in me

SN: (this is where I’ve stopped in sessions so far and I’ve started from the beginning, but in the future, or if the group was bigger I would go on to the last verse, I also have duplicates of some cards for larger groups.)

I am yellow today, I shine my light out like the sun

I am white today, soft and quiet like new snow

I am blue today, calm as glass and cool like the sea

It’s a real simple song with simple chords (G/D/C/D). Here is the youtube video

If you read the description you can see this is off of her yoga CD for kids and watching the video see how they are doing it with movement.  I think depending on who you are working with there are a lot of activities you could do with this song individually or in a group. You can even check out some of her other songs which might be good to use for activities.
